On this page we are featuring a mantel project we just completed this winter (2010).in Herndon, Virginia
It was designed and built to the homeowner's specifications, in that he wanted a mantel that would conceal all his equipment.
As you can see the fluted pilaster legs conceal storage for dvd's, while the actual mantel has room for the components and center channel speaker. We re-framed the empty space behind and above the fireplace to make room. The mantel's breastplate hinges up to reveal the hidden storage areas. We made the center panel in he breastplate with two inserts... one solid wood and one a metal speaker grill.
I am hoping to get a couple final pictures of this mantel / entertainment center with the television and components installed. I will post them here when available.

AFTER PICTURES:
This is a picture after completing the painting. All that is left is the installation of the flat screen television and the components. The area was recessed above the mantel shelf so the screen mounting bracket could be set back, allowing the TV to sit closer to the wall surface.
Here is the mantel with all the hidden storage areas opened up. Both the left and right spaces behind the mantel are plenty high enough to stack 2 components apiece. Also there is plenty of center space behind the grill for the center channel speaker and accessory storage. The pilaster legs are cabinets with doors that have fluted fronts, plinths and rosettes with concealed euro style hinges.
CONSTRUCTION PICTURES:
The construction of the mantel and fireplace surround is mainly solid poplar wood and birch plywood. The mouldings are primed pine. It was all finished off with several coats of semi-gloss paint.
